FUNNIEST MOMENTEasily Aggers (Jonathan Agnew) and Johnners (Brian Johnston) with the ‘leg over’ episode.
It’s timeless, and the uncontrolled stifled laughter is utterly infectious.CMJ (Christopher Martin-Jenkins) also tried to soldier on in 2008 when he described a Stuart Broad delivery to Daniel Vettori: ‘It was a good length, inviting him to fish.
But Vettori stays on the bank and keeps his… rod down… so to speak.’Aggers’ recent wind-up of Geoffrey Boycott over his hundredth 100 will go down as a TMS classic, even more so because it was on video. STRANGEST DELIVERYCakes, cheeses and pork pies are commonplace.
In 2009 a small metal tube arrived in the commentary box at Lord’s during the West Indies series. It held the ashes of a listener. The TMS team were asked if they could scatter them on the outfield when they did the pitch report. It was duly done. Mitchell is no stranger to The Ashes, but was shocked when asked to deal with an ex-listener’s EMBARRASSING MOMENTBeing locked inside a hot, rank and mosquito-ridden lavatory cubicle during a tea interval at the India v England Test in Chennai in 2008.Security had been ramped up after the Mumbai terror attacks and when, after 20 minutes, I made my plaintive cries for help heard over the crowd’s din, it was India’s specialist ‘Rapid Action Force’ who responded.Instead of countering terrorism that day, they kicked down a toilet door and rescued me.
Aggers was commentating when I returned sheepishly, and late, to the commentary box. He got some mileage out of the story — once he’d flushed it out of me… BIZARRE MOMENTWhen Geoffrey Boycott invited a few of us to his house near Cape Town for dinner during the 2009 ODI series – http://www.examandinterviewtips.com/search?q=ODI%20series in South Africa, there was another couple there when we arrived.Once Geoffrey was out of the room we asked how they knew Geoffrey and his wife Rachael.
‘We don’t!’ was their reply.‘We won a week’s holiday at their house in a charity auction at Yorkshire Cricket Club. We didn’t know Geoffrey would be here at the time!’ Mitchell once had dinner at Geoffrey Boycott’s house with a couple of charity auction – http://www.twitpic.com/tag/charity%20auction winners TRICKY BEING A WOMAN (PART i)On the eve of the 2011 World Cup semi-final between India and Pakistan, the team hotel in Mohali was crawling with armed guards.I’d asked Pakistan speedster shoaib akhtar wife – http://gauravghosh026.diowebhost.com/28762816/know-more-about-shoaib-akhtar-wife Akhtar if I could do a one-to-one interview about his impending retirement and he asked if we could record it in his room, where it would be quiet.I headed up at the agreed time, but before I could knock on the door, a female security guard was suddenly next to me, grabbing my arm and marching me down to the lobby.
It became evident she didn’t believe I was a journalist, but that I belonged to a very different sort of profession! I still got the interview later. TRICKY BEING A WOMAN (PART ii)My first England Test tour with the BBC was to Pakistan. I learnt that even hotel bars were very conservative and men could enter this one particular bar only if they were part of a couple. As the only female in a group of players and journalists who were looking for a drink after the Lahore Test, I was suddenly extremely popular.
I ‘partnered’ a player into the bar, then surreptitiously came back out and was on the arm of the next journo or player past the doormen and into the bar.I did this several times and clearly played a convincing role, as I was greeted with a hearty smile and a handshake from the concierge the next morning: ‘Your husband, he very good cricketer, Mrs Flintoff!’ Mitchell was mistaken for ‘Mrs Flintoff’ in Pakistan.
